ONDRAF/NIRAS WISHES YOU A RADIANT 2025!

As the new year begins, we'd like to extend our warmest wishes to you and your loved ones. We hope the New Year brings much happiness.

In 2025, ONDRAF/NIRAS will continue its efforts to ensure the safe management of radioactive waste in Belgium. Short-lived low- and intermediate-level waste will have to be managed safely for several hundred years, while high-level and/or long-lived waste will have to be managed for hundreds of thousands of years.

ONDRAF/NIRAS has established a waste management system within which it implements solutions that are duly justified from a scientific, technical and industrial standpoint and that are economically and socially responsible. Of course, safety always comes first. We are already ensuring a sustainable future for current and future generations.

Looking forward to the Dessel repository

For Belgian low- and intermediate-level short-lived waste, ONDRAF/NIRAS is developing a surface disposal facility in Dessel. In 2025, we will continue our work to build this repository. To put the spotlight on this project, we're organising a big exhibition at Tabloo, combined with a “Festival of Time”.

Further dismantling in Fleurus

Several years ago, ONDRAF/NIRAS was tasked with dismantling and remediating the nuclear site of the bankrupt Best Medical Belgium S.A. in Fleurus. In 2025, we will pursue these activities in complete safety. We thrive to reduce the amount of radioactive waste as much as possible and to recycle uncontaminated materials. The entire operation will continue until 2028.

ONDRAF/NIRAS prepares for the future

In 2025 too, we will be advising legislators, drawing on our specific expertise. In the New Year, we will be submitting a proposal to the federal government for the long-term management of radioactive radium-bearing waste. We are also preparing the decision-making process for the deep disposal of high-level and/or long-lived waste.

A face-lift for our website

In 2025, ONDRAF/NIRAS will be launching a new website that will bring a breath of fresh air to the way we communicate. Follow us for more information about our activities.
